Are AI tools killing our creativity?
We unpack a new study from MIT
According to a new study from MIT, relying too much on ChatGPT could affect how our brains work because we form a habit of outsourcing critical thinking, and creativity.
In a study where participants were given writing tasks, ChatGPT users had the lowest brain engagement and “consistently underperformed at neural, linguistic, and behavioural levels.”
Who doesn’t love a shortcut? That is exactly what AI tools provide: accelerating work, sparking ideas, and helping us organise our thoughts more efficiently.
But ease isn’t always the goal. Sometimes the struggle to form the idea is where the magic happens.
This doesn’t mean AI destroys thinking; it just changes how and when we engage our mental muscles.
It is a bit like using a calculator. It is great for speeding up math but if you stop practicing mental arithmetic altogether those skills weaken. The key is balance and intentional use.
This isn’t an anti-AI post. It’s a reminder: Use the tool, sure. But don’t lose the muscle.
What have you noticed in your own habits? Are there things you’re no longer doing yourself because it’s just easier to let AI do it?
