“Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.”
Barack Obama
It’s no secret that society is a long way off from achieving diversity and inclusion. Though inspiring leaders like Obama have certainly moved the dial for representation, it shouldn’t be impressive that an African American was elected as the President of the United States in the 21st Century. And yet, this is the reality we’re living in.
How a company approaches inclusion impacts the success of it’s efforts. If you ask us, change must come from the top down, particularly in the workplace. As a leader, it’s your responsibility to set the tone for what is right and wrong for your employees. The ‘best teaching practice’ is that you must be a role model and embody the actions you want to see from your team (Forbes).
By demonstrating what inclusive behaviour looks like you can effectively showcase what you expect from your team, whilst creating the right conditions for marginalised groups to thrive in.
Inclusive Employers echo this idea of taking the lead when it comes to inclusive behaviour:
‘Role modelling for inclusion is about taking action to encourage and inspire others to act inclusively.’
After all, nobody likes a boss that doesn’t practise what they preach.
For the parents reading, this advice might remind you of the adage “kids don’t do what you say, they do what they see.” In teams, colleagues copy their leaders’ actions: even if those actions don’t align with HR best practices like an inclusion statement or anti-harassment policy.
By fostering a workplace where everyone feels valued and respected, you can improve the well-being of your employees, and even improve your business’ success. In fact, YouGov found that inclusive teams are more productive by over 35%. What's more, diverse companies enjoy 2.5 times higher cash flow per employee. Ka-ching.
What other benefits can an inclusive role model bring about in the workplace?
Higher team morale
Inspiration and improved innovation
Increased sales and/or customer satisfaction
Longer staff retention
Stronger brand identity
More desirable company reputation
So, what can you do as a leader to set a positive example for inclusivity?
Monkey see, monkey do: The simplest way to be a role model for inclusivity is by demonstrating respect for all employees, regardless of background, beliefs or challenges. Act with empathy and compassion, and others will copy.
Protect your people: Set up EDI initiatives, processes or even a committee, all of which help ensure a fairer working environment. The more people that get involved, the better.
Through the Looking Glass: Publish a Diversity Report. It’s not about being the most inclusive but start by being the most transparent, and you’re halfway there. Going public with your inclusivity efforts also encourages other businesses to follow suit.
Practice makes perfect: Nobody is expecting you to get it right straight away. Be open to feedback and learn from your mistakes. Remember, there are plenty of resources out there, such as Hustle Crew Academy, that offer the right tools to be a more inclusive leader.
The term ‘role model’ can be rather intimidating. But it doesn’t mean you have to be perfect. As a leader, it’s more important that you’re open to learning and strive to create the healthiest environment for your team.
